Walnut Road Street Party 2019 Review
It was not our usual dry warm day for the 12th Annual Walnut Road Community Street Party on Saturday 10th August 2019. The wind blew, and blew and rain threatened all afternoon. However, this did not put us off or the hundreds of people that attended and helped raise over £2000. A real testament to the volunteers and helpers who made the event a success again.
The collaboration with the Chelston Manor has been a great success over the past 4 years. The Chelston Manor run the Bar and BBQ, which means that the street party volunteer committee can concentrate on raising the donations for charity with the wide range of stalls managed by the army of over 80 volunteers made up from the local community. All profits from the stalls, raffle and Charity Auction were donated to Rowcroft Hospice in 2019.
There is plenty to do for the children with face painting, childrens entertainment, childrens games and traditional fancy dress competition. There is also lots of opportunities for the adults to spend their money on the BBQ and Bar, charity auction, raffle, tombolas and side shows. This year we added a craft room too which was very popular. There was live music too with people dancing in the pub garden until the end of the evening.
This year the event raised £2,200 for our local Rowcroft Hospice. Since the event started 12 years ago, over £33,000 has been raised for Charity. Now that’s something for the Chelston Community to be proud of.
Debbi Shotton, Community Fundraising Officer for Rowcroft Hospice said “This is such an amazing sum to have raised and we are so grateful to the community for coming together for us in this way. Over 75% of the care we provide is funded by voluntary donations. We care for over 2000 patients and their loved ones across 300 sq miles of South Devon and we couldn’t do it without support such as this.”
We truly believe that the street party is a celebration of the local community and raising funds for charity is an added bonus. Without the support of local businesses and the local community the event would not happen or be such a success. Well done Chelston Community.
