Street Party

10th August 2019 will be the 12th Annual Street Party

and we are holding it with our Partners and friends the Chelston Manor Pub from 2pm – 10pm. Look out for more information on our FB page or check out this page regularly for updates. Everyone Welcome.

In 2008 Chelston Walnut Road Post Office was designated to be closed in Post Office Limited’s round of Post Office closures under Network Change. The local community felt their Post Office was the “hub” of the local community and therefore the local traders, businesses and local people put together a very strong case to oppose the closure and managed to get the decision overturned and the Post Office was reprieved. Working together had a very positive effect on the local area and a renewed sense of community was felt and many people wanted to celebrate this. The 1st Walnut Road Street Party was organised and held just 3 weeks after hearing of the decision of the reprieve. The street party has been held annually ever since.

Walnut Road Street Party 2018 Review

It was a hot day for the 11th Annual Walnut Road Community Street Party on Saturday 4th August 2018.

The collaboration with the Chelston Manor has been a great success over the past 3 years. The Chelston Manor run the Bar and BBQ, which means that the street party volunteer committee can concentrate on raising the donations for charity with the wide range of stalls managed by the army of over 80 volunteers made up from the local community. All profits from the stalls, raffle and Charity Auction were donated to Rowcroft Hospice in 2018.

Each year over 700 people have attended. There is plenty to do for the children with face painting, children’s entertainment, children’s games and traditional fancy dress competition.  There is also lots of opportunities for the adults to spend their money on the BBQ and Bar, charity auction, raffle, tombolas and side shows. There was live music too with people dancing in the pub garden until the end of the evening.

This year the event raised  £2,700 for our local Rowcroft Hospice. Since the event started 11 years ago, over £30,000 has been raised for Charity. Now that’s something for the Chelston Community to be proud of.

Debbi Shotton, Community Fundraising Officer for Rowcroft Hospice said “This is such an amazing sum to have raised and we are so grateful to the community for coming together for us in this way. Over 75% of the care we provide is funded by voluntary donations. We care for over 2000 patients and their loved ones across 300 sq miles of South Devon and we couldn’t do it without support such as this.”

We truly believe that the street party is a celebration of the local community and raising funds for charity is an added bonus. Without the support of local businesses and the local community the event would not happen or be such a success. Well done Chelston Community.
